As a cook, you will play a key role in our kitchen, helping to support the Head Cook in planning, preparing and serving balanced meals that are delicious and nutritional for the residents in our homes. Food is such an important part of people’s lives, your role will see you deliver comfort, enjoyment and help improve health and wellbeing for everyone in your dining room. All of our cooks also need a Food Hygiene Certificate Level 2 or above.
What makes a great care home cook?
Culinary and nutritional expertise. Residents in our care home have many specific requirements when it comes to meals, whether it be due to special diets, health conditions or personal preferences. We’re looking for cooks who can create balanced, nutritional meals to meet the needs of each individual and ensure they maintain the best health possible.
Creativity and adaptability. Use your culinary expertise to adapt traditional cooking techniques , creatively present meals and plan a varied menu to encourage a continued interest at meal times. Cooking may include pre-cutting foods to enable easier consumption or preparing soft foods using moulds to support individuals with difficulty swallowing.
Attention to detail. We need people who can prepare meals safely and hygienically, ensuring they adhere to all health and safety regulations in the kitchen. Cooks should also have a keen eye for managing portion sizes, knowledge of ingredients in each meal and beautiful food presentation to help entice residents to eat – essential to their overall health and wellbeing.
