Introducing you to care with our care home staff training

Excellent training is crucial to the outstanding level of care that we provide, as well as our team’s job satisfaction. Your career progression is important to us, that’s why our bespoke training will develop your skills and empower you to be the best you can be.

All of our care home staff are supported with the knowledge, skills and confidence to provide the best care and quality service.

Training modules

Your care home staff training will begin with a 12-week induction programme. No matter your position in the home, you will be supported through this transition when you begin your new role, developing a deeper understanding of our person-centred social care and best practice. All of our training is delivered in our B&M Care blended learning system – a combination of E-Learning and face-to-face learning.

All mandatory training required to work in adult social care is provided to every member of the team in our homes. We believe that the most effective person-centred care is delivered through a ‘whole home’ approach and that it is valuable for every member of staff, no matter their position, to have a cohesive understanding of dementia care. We have developed our own Rose Model of Dementia Care which informs all training that we provide.

Our prestige training programme has 25 courses in total that cover all mandatory care training as well as our own accredited dementia training. All of our staff support and mentor each other, and our in-house training team ensures the training is industry-envied and emphasises practical competencies.

Our Leadership Pathway

We are also proud to offer our Leadership Pathway to staff members who are interested in accelerating their skillset and becoming leaders in the social care industry. This programme is an innovative, in-house development programme that will accelerate your progression by giving you the training needed to lead and inspire a future generation of B&M Care staff.

Launched in 2015, this 8-month course – typically running from April to November – welcomes applicants from our talented team across our 28 care homes. The Pathway aims to recognise and celebrate internal success, broadening each candidate’s skills and capabilities.

Themes include:

  • Customer Service (Enquirer-Focused)
  • Finance
  • Leadership
  • Sales & Marketing
  • HR
  • Strategy

The programme is open to any existing members of staff in a Senior Care Assistant role or above. This programme has so far supported 11 Home Managers and one Operations Manager to progress.

“The training and development at B&M Care has consistently given me the skills and confidence to grow within the group. The Leadership Pathway really supported me in my journey to becoming a Home Manager, and even more so in my current role.”

Ilona Sukelovic (B&M Care Operations Manager)

Care Home Staff Training with the Virtual Dementia Tour®

This in-house training programme is open to all existing and new employees, as well as members of the public who would like to build a greater understanding of those living with dementia.

At present, the Virtual Dementia Tour® is taken by over 200,000 people in the UK every year. It’s been commissioned as benchmark training by over 18 NHS Trusts, 4 HSE Trusts, police and ambulance services, CQC, and within social care settings.

Why do we encourage our team members to learn with the Virtual Dementia Tour? ®

Launched in the UK in 2016 at Ashlyns Care Home in Berkhamsted in partnership with care training specialists Training 2 Care, the Virtual Dementia Tour® is a ground-breaking, evidence-based experience that builds greater understanding around dementia.

This training enables you to experience for yourself the physical and cognitive challenges that an individual living with dementia faces. We use advanced technology to alter your senses, then ask you to complete a series of common everyday tasks and exercises. This will help you to gain a deeper understanding of what those living with dementia experience, meaning you can provide the best care. This experience will also help you to understand just how vital the care you provide is to the lives of people living with dementia.

After The Virtual Dementia Tour®, staff will have:

  • Experienced the physical and cognitive challenges of moderate dementia
  • Developed further learning around dementia and how a dementia can affect a person
  • Developed further understanding around person-centred care and how to apply it within a care home setting
  • Received certification of attendance
